In preparation for this Saturday’s event at The Zoo in Manchester, we caught up with headliner and long time junglist DAZEE repping hard for the scene for many years!!
For people that don’t know, can you give us a little background on yourself please?
I co founded ruffenck ting in 1993 with markee substance and it soon became a seemingly much loved dnb club night and record label. From this launch pad my career took off quite well and I played at events such as universe , dreamscape, helter skelter had sets on one in the jungle and lovely stuff like that
Have you always enjoyed the art of music / how did you get into it all?
Well I actually moved to bristol to do an art degree ( I still work in visual arts / education now) but while I was studying I had friends who were djs and caught the bug . When I finished my degree I advertised for a flat mate for a house I wanted to rent and markee became that flat mate . We filled the house up with more like minded people called ourselves “ the ledge crew ” and worked together to promote our love of jungle . As The club night blossomed , Rachel and Colin (ledge crew members) started knowledge magazine and markee and I started producing together and launched the label .
Back in the day Ruffneck Ting used to absolutely rinse “Damn Right and Homeboyz”, what prompted you re-launch the label?
We wanted to celebrate 20 years since we founded the club plus I’d started working with jinx and kjah and had some releases lined up. We put on a big ruffneck ting night at Lakota and released a classics digital album both named RNT20. This created a great platform to go on and release the new tunes
What sound are you pushing through Ruff Neck Ting and why?
The organic sound of classic jungle will probably always be present in our music but we’re still aiming to be progressive. We’ll probably alwAys use a certain amount of samples and classic breaks as they add that evocative dimension you just can’t recreate with synths or even live recordings alone . But all our artists are constantly moving forward with new techniques and ideas. We’ll always want to be known for creating party vibes but hopefully with a depth and soul that the head nodders love as much as the gun finger massive.
What artists do you have on the label currently?
jinx, kjah, vytol, the force, habitat, sterling sounds, serum, Saxxon and myself of course plus more coming through soon . We’ve had some really good responses to our releases so far including a few number ones in download charts and great international support
Will upcoming projects can you let us know about?
Well there’s A special Santa surprise in the form of a fab Late December release from K JAH . Vytol is also putting his ep together which includes the amazing headz track. Jinx has his next ep more or less ready to go . I’m gonna finally finish my ep…and something a little different will be coming later next year ….
CD or Vinyl?
Well I absolutely love serato now with control vinyl and it’s a fab teaching tool too . But it’s a pain to plug into clubs so I go for safe bet cdjs mostly when djing out Do you miss the old days cutting dubz? I miss the social and networking side of meeting everyone at music house . I don’t miss the expense .!
You are gigging quite frequently, are you looking forward to your debit Manchester event at Sub-Woofah, The Zoo this weekend?
Really looking forward to playing Manchester as it’s a second home . I spent my teens there and have family close to the city . Been a bit of an ambition actually to bring the sound of RUffneck tIng to Manchester so thanks very much for bringing me in to dj !
& finally, what can people expect from your set on Saturday??
Hopefully most of the label tracks, which I’ll aim to put together in an enjoyable way for the floor . You may also spot the odd “jazz hand ” and some over enthusiastic bouncing from behind the decks. Thank you, and see you Saturday!!
